It is with a grateful heart that I can report that the Modesto Gospel Mission is no longer under a quarantine order, and all guests and employees that contracted the coronavirus have fully recovered without any lasting problems. This pandemic is still very active in our community, especially the homeless population. Yet God has been so faithful in providing the means to push through this pandemic at the Mission. Your prayers, calls, and support are evidence of how loving this community is that we all call home. Thank you for your generosity and your care. For the last 72 years, your Mission has pressed forward with God’s provision to provide a Refuge for Recovery and Restoration through the power and the love of Jesus Christ. In these topsy-turvy times, we have had to adjust our methods and programs to meet the needs of the “least of these” in our community. One example of such an adjustment is mobilizing Mission resources to provide services outside our buildings and off campus; Mission staff and volunteers hand delivered over 2,600 “senior care kits” to elderly folks in our region, and took our annual Back to School Block Party event on the road by distributing school shoes directly to over 1,400 kids where they lived. As these uncertain times are affecting each of us, I am personally grateful for who God is in my life, and how He is so faithful to work on our behalf at all times.
Meet Jesus L., a current member of our New Life Program and one of the 44 individuals infected by the coronavirus here at the Mission.
Jesus L. came to the Modesto Gospel Mission desperately seeking to learn how to live a normal life. He didn’t struggle as much with drugs and alcohol as he did with the ability to make healthy and responsible choices. Most importantly, he was lacking a relationship with the Lord – something he knew he needed as soon as he walked through our doors. Months after working on his life here at the Mission, he contracted COVID-19 and was placed in quarantine. However, Jesus L. was able to fully recover and has since resumed his regular program work. In addition, Jesus L. helped others that were diagnosed with COVID-19 and was integral in supporting the other men in quarantine!
“When I went through the Coronavirus, I will be honest, I was scared. I prayed for healing and protection and began to see my symptoms reduce. By day 4, my symptoms were gone completely! I know it was the Lord that healed me. Moving forward, my goal is to stay in the Word and continue serving here at the Modesto Gospel Mission. I am now giving God permission to guide my life and I’m letting go of my own desires.”
As we head into an autumn that is still punctuated by social distancing and masks due to COVID precautions, we have been forced to modify our annual fall gala from an in-person event with great local food and musical talent to a virtual gala where attendance is FREE. The Mission will be headed to Crossroads Grace Church to host a free-to-watch, on-line, live-stream event that will feature multiple testimonies from our guests, my update on the current state of the Mission, and a sneak-peek video on life at the Mission during quarantine. There will be plenty of ways to support the Mission through donations, and a silent auction that includes some great items!
You can stream the event live in the comfort of your own home through the Mission’s Facebook, Instagram, and/or YouTube channels, as well as through the Crossroads Grace Church website at www.crossroadsgrace.org. As our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year, you won’t want to miss it! Since seating is not an issue, invite your friends and family to watch too!
Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus during these times and caring for those in our community that need help. You make a huge difference and impact in Modesto and the surrounding areas. Because of your sacrificial giving, we have been able to minister to the elderly (senior care kits), to children (back to school shoes), to the sick (isolation quarters), and to all of the men, women, and families that we shelter each night. Although 2020 is a unique year thus far, we have been able to continue to provide exceptional services due to your donations, prayers, financial support, and volunteer hours. As we head into Autumn, please prayerfully consider becoming a monthly financial partner of the Mission. Your monthly gift of $25, $50 or $100 is a seed that impacts lives through Christ who brings about new life to the men, women and children that come through these doors.
