It is that time of year that autumn has arrived, the joy of Thanksgiving is a few weeks away, and Christmas is right around the corner! Wow! Truly, I am thankful for the family and life that God has given me. I remember my first Thanksgiving here at the Modesto Gospel Mission. I still recall how much I appreciated having a place to enjoy a simple Thanksgiving meal for the first time in many years. I came into the Mission in 2007 – homeless, broken, and so removed from the enjoyment of this fall season; and so it was truly a blessing to me to have a place that I could call home, if even for just a moment. Today, I celebrate with a beautiful wife and a lively three-year-old son to embrace during these holiday seasons at a house we own and call “home.”
However, in 2019 there are still so many people in our community who find themselves in desperate circumstances, just as I was 12 years ago. Homelessness tears through the fabric of these holidays and leaves men, women, and children simply trying to lay hold of some type of hope. What is often a joy-filled season for us can be really agonizing (both physically AND emotionally) for those living on the streets.
Today, I’m still thankful to God for you who continue to believe and deposit hope in the hearts of those we serve during these holiday months. Because of your faithfulness and generosity, the Modesto Gospel Mission provides a place for all to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal through our annual event, The Great Thanksgiving Banquet & Bundle Up, on November 27th from 11 AM – 2 PM. It is during this wonderful affair that the Mission provides a delicious Thanksgiving meal, and blesses all who come with a coat, hat, scarf, and gloves to keep warm during the winter months.
This year we will serve thousands during this season, providing each with the love of Christ and a safe, warm place to experience the holidays. It seems that often the summer gives way to winter suddenly, without a proper autumn. This sudden temperature change causes an increase of men, women, and children that will come through the doors of the Mission. This gives the Mission a great opportunity to provide refuge for recovery and restoration through the power and love of Jesus Christ.
I want to wish you a very jubilant Thanksgiving! Thank YOU for giving generously and volunteering dependently. Without YOU the Mission cannot meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the increased population we serve in the fall and winter. As we give thanks for the many blessings that we enjoy, I pray you will join us in blessing others through the end of this year! Please prayerfully consider being a monthly partner of Modesto Gospel Mission by visiting our website at modestogospelmission.org.
Again, thank you for your devotion to making a difference and being a part of transforming lives through the power and the love of Jesus Christ. Happy Thanksgiving!
