When difficult circumstances arise there tends to be two responses – either we fight or we run. We tend to only fight the battles we believe we can win or obtain a favorable outcome. However, we run from those situations that we see as insurmountable or outside our realm of comprehension. Both of these responses are trying to get to the same destination – which is “out.” Out of this mess, out of this pain, out of this place…just out.

As you dive into scripture, you will find the God offers another response – surrendering to Him and giving our good, our bad, and everything else to God. This might sound easy, but in the face of absolute devastation, it is one of the most challenging things you can do as a Christian.

Surrendering to Christ in all life’s situations can be summed up in Proverbs 3:5-6 which states “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths”.

I believe this is an active statement. Every day and in every circumstance we must surrender to God, relying on his understanding and not our own. Surrender is not a one-time occurrence, but a way of life.

However, even in the struggle there is the promise that when you trust God and abandon your own understanding, He will make your paths straight. Be encouraged that as we surrender daily, stand on his word, and believe in His promises – He will take care of us.
