Happiness or peace? Happiness is generally a good feeling, but upon further investigation we come to realize that happiness is a temporary reaction to momentary goodness. Unfortunately, our happiness is all too soon overshadowed by the mountains of anxiety, stress, and difficulties that loom over us daily.
As we tilt our heads back to take in the enormity of our reality, Christ is right there beside us with a plan. Sometimes our great shepard walks us around our mountains showing us a path we didn’t see. Other times, He leads us up the sheer face of our problems – guiding us along the way. In addition to guidance and direction, He offers us something else – peace.
Philippians 4: 4-7 tells us “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
As we grapple life’s most difficult circumstances, Jesus offers us something far greater than temporary happiness – He offers us peace. The peace of Christ is so amazing that it transcends human understanding, not only that, but it guards our hearts and our minds.
In our brokenness, let us rejoice in the Lord because of who He is. We can bring Him our requests, thanking Him in advance and realizing that He is able. We are able to take a deep breath and rest in the Peace of our Lord.
