What is the fastest way from one place to another? If you instantly thought of a straight line, it’s safe to say you share the same thought pattern as most of us. Speed and efficiency have always been rewarded in our daily lives. There are very few times (if any) that we are faced with a problem that is not time- sensitive. There is always a destination or a goal that needs to be achieved and it’s always “the sooner the better.”

However, in studying the Bible I have begun to notice that this is not always the way God works. Take for example when the Israelites escaped from Egypt.

Exodus 13:17 (NLT) states,“When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, ‘If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”

It seems that God is just as concerned with the journey as He is with the destination. Knowing us far better than we could ever know ourselves, the Lord takes us on a journey that is about more than just getting us from point A to B. Consider Mark: 35-41, a seemingly short journey from one side of a lake to the other turned into a life-changing and faith-building experience.

In those times when the journey seems pointless, the walk seems aimless, and the circumstances worse than you could ever imagine, know that your heavenly father will not waste one step. Know that the Lord is sovereign over the destination and the journey.
