Dear champions of the community,
Refuge. Recovery. Restoration.
These three words have authority because each are only achieved through the power and love of Jesus Christ. Each day the Modesto Gospel Mission is working to transform lives and build God’s Kingdom here in the Central Valley, funded by your generous donations of time and resources. Together we are making a difference in this wonderful community and truly we are carrying out the Great Commission to make disciples of Jesus Christ through many impactful programs. Today I wanted to introduce you to Maira and give you a chance to hear her testimony.
“My name is Maira Elizondo, and I am 30 years old. I’m a single mother of 4 children, and I am currently 34 weeks pregnant with my 5th child. I grew up with my mother and 7 siblings. I met the father of my children in 2007 and by 2015 he had become abusive. The domestic violence continued into late 2018. I prayed that God would guide me out of this toxic and abusive relationship. In 2019 I was involved in a CPS case due to the domestic violence in my home. I lost my children, my job, and my house all in the same month. I was homeless and moving from one shelter to another until I came to the Modesto Gospel Mission in November 2019. During the three months I stayed at the Mission I was able to find housing, and I was reunified with my children in February. I am really grateful for the Mission staff and New Life Program ladies that were there to keep me and my children in prayer. I thank the Modesto Gospel Mission for all the support and help it provided. Thank the Lord for this blessing and for guiding me on the correct path.”
The Modesto Gospel Mission is privileged to minister to one of the most heart-breaking needs in our community, sheltering women and children. There are many different places that provide shelter to women; however, within the city of Modesto and the surrounding area there are only a few locations where women with children can find refuge from the streets. Women and children are one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population nationwide, and Modesto is no different. This area of need is overwhelming, and daily the Modesto Gospel Mission runs at full capacity at our women’s building. In fact, our women’s 2-story building houses close to 80 women and children each night. After dinner, our staff moves the furniture in the building’s living room and puts down cots just to allow more bed spaces. Each week, we are turning away both women and mothers with children, and this is something that is unacceptable! But we have some ideas for solutions to this problem. My team is actively considering different options to increase capacity so that we can meet the current needs. Alongside the women and children’s shelter program, the Mission provides a residential 18-month New Life Program that currently has over 20 women that are committing their lives to recovery and restoration. Even though the existing need is great, we are so blessed that you provide the volunteer support and sustainable donations that allow our doors to be open. Just imagine if the Mission did not exist – how much more would this problem burden the community? Thank you for being the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, as we act and work together in making this community a place that we all call home. The Modesto Gospel Mission offers a fresh start to all that desire to change their lives. Thank you for caring and supporting this ministry through your volunteer time and financial seeds. Thank you for being the champions of this wonderful community and making a difference. Your generosity provides hope for so many of those men, women, and children whom Jesus called our neighbors. He is risen!
