Hello Friends,

We have some BIG things going on here at the Mission! If you made it to our heart of a donor breakfast/fundraiser, then you already heard about our new projects! For those of you who were unable to attend Heart of a Donor, we will recap the news!

Starting May 15th, the Mission officially relaunched services that the pandemic affected, including our Youth Center. Our Youth Center operates as an after-school program for at-risk children in the community 5 days a week. The Youth Center provides a brand-new curriculum this year which is tailored to provide Biblical truth to children of all ages. This “Orange” curriculum engages our kids and creates a weekly evaluation program for every child that comes through our doors. For many of our daily visitors to the Youth Center, this is the only Biblical material they have ever heard.

“Wow, we have the best youth center in town!” said Thomas (age 16). “We’ve missed this place but now it’s better than ever!” said Isabella (age 8). These were some of the many comments made as our Youth Center re-opened for orientation on Thursday, April 15th. It was such a blessing! We had 27 returning neighborhood children and 10 parents that attended the first day of orientation! We expect many more on Friday, April 16th as the word gets out! The kids expressed their excitement for the official opening on Monday, April 19th and were very impressed by the transformation of the Youth Center.

During Covid, Youth Center staff, community volunteers, local church organizations, and donors worked very hard at construction and upgrades to both the building and the Youth Center program that would create a better atmosphere and provide more resources physically, emotionally, and spiritually to the youth in our community. Youth Center Manager Cristina Green said, “We couldn’t have accomplished this work without the generous help of our donors, volunteers, and staff! Thank you! Seeing the faces of each child light up as they entered the Youth Center was so fulfilling and I couldn’t have expected a better re-opening!”

Additionally, as the county has moved to a healthier colored tier, the Modesto Gospel Mission has increased the number of guests sheltered each night. The Mission is now sheltering at 75% of its capacity, and the hope as we head into summer is to be serving at 90% full capacity soon. This means that we will be sheltering 225 men, women, and kids each night once again.

Please be praying for the Mission so that we can continue to advance forward out of pandemic mode into serving more of those hurting and hopeless on our streets. Thank for making this “Your Mission” through your prayers, financial support, and volunteer hours. You are the champions of the “least of these” in our community.

We are happy to begin to welcome you back! Our volunteer programs are up and running in full force! This means that you are officially able to sign-up online again for our regular volunteer opportunities. Our kitchen has missed having faithful volunteers over the last year and we are excited to welcome you all back here and in other locations and opportunities around the Mission campus. We also love big groups, so feel free to contact us about scheduling your family, youth group, co-workers, small/life group, book club, or corporate employees. Feel free to contact Emily, our volunteer coordinator, for more information. You can reach Emily at 209.225.2907 or emily@homelessmission.org to volunteer.

We have begun a new HUGE project here at the Mission. Our upstairs bathroom! This project will cost over $400,000 and is worth every penny. For the last 25 years, our communal men’s restroom has provided over 500,000 showers. To put it into perspective, that is roughly the population of all of Stanislaus County! We have really needed to update this restroom and in the process, we will be moving away from the communal style and instead provide our guests with the dignity they deserve by installing individual shower stalls. This project is already underway, so if you would like to come out and see this project in action, come on by!

With all of the re-openings and this major construction project, your giving is more crucial than ever and we thank you for your generosity.

God bless,

Jason Conway, Executive Director
New Life Program Graduate 2008
