Dear Friends of the Mission,

A significant event in a child’s life is the first day of school. Do you remember when you were growing up, anticipating the first day of school? It was probably important to you to have new clothes and shoes when you arrived on campus. I remember how tough it was for my parents to afford school clothes for my brother and me; yet I always remember starting the year with at least one new set of clothes and a new pair of shoes. However, for many families in our community, the thought of buying new clothes and shoes for their kids is just another burden they cannot afford. So many local families struggle with basic needs such as shelter and meals, and new clothes are way down the list. The good news is that the Modesto Gospel Mission will partner again with Big Valley Grace Church “Kicks for Kids” to host our annual Back to School Block Party event. This event is a way we can tangibly show the love of Christ for the underprivileged children in Modesto.

Each year because of you the Modesto Gospel Mission holds this remarkable event, to help young boys and girls usher in a new and successful school year. Our Back to School event will provide each child with new shoes, a haircut, a Bible, and a morning that is filled with fun and excitement. Last year we blessed over 900 young boys and girls with a brand-new pair of shoes to kick off a new school year. This event is incredible, providing each child with self-confidence by providing a new pair of shoes to start the year off right.

This wonderful community event cannot happen without YOU providing of your time and resources. Our Back to School event will be happening on Saturday, July 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We would love for you to volunteer if you are able. This event is for you if you like working with children, or just like the experience of watching kids have the biggest smiles, laughing, and joy. Please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer at jennifer@homelessmission.org and in the email subject line type “Back to School Volunteer” and Jennifer will respond back and sign you up.

On another note, our wet winter has quickly changed into summer’s scorching heat. During this time, our Day Center is filled with men and women staying with us during the day to beat the blistering temperatures. We also extend our Youth Center hours to accommodate children who are out of school. It is a critical time for the people we serve to stay cool and hydrated. We need your ongoing prayers and donations to continue to operate the Youth Center and a cooling station/Day Center, where homeless men and women can come during the day to get services, assistance, and escape from the heat. Would you consider donating to the Mission during these crucial summer months?

Thank you, for giving hope to so many daily as we provide a place of Refuge for Recovery and Restoration through the love and power of Jesus Christ. It is such a blessing to continue to work with men, women, and children, and provide hope and real results. As one of our employees said recently, the Mission is a place where we see miracles happen on a regular basis. If you have never toured the Mission, I would love to give you a personal tour.
