Each area of service has its own age limit with the discretion of the manager in that area. As an example, no one under the age of 10 years old may serve in the kitchen area.

The Modesto Gospel Mission does a background check on anyone volunteering at the Mission's Youth Center that is 18 years old or older. The Mission also conducts a Megan’s Law check on all volunteers. The background check process can take a couple of days or a couple of weeks depending on the person and their background. If an individual has lived outside of California, the background check will take longer to process than someone who has lived at the same residence for the past 7 years.

Typical volunteer shifts range from 1 to 3 hours. Some special events require more in certain cases.

The Mission's dress code for volunteers includes: no tank tops, sleeveless shirts, or low-cut blouses/shirts; shorts, skirts, or dresses must be knee-length (knee exposed is acceptable); no tight fitting clothing; shoes are required, and no open-toe shoes or sandals are allowed while performing duties; neat and clean clothing is suggested, and slacks/jeans and blouse/shirt would be considered appropriate attire for volunteer assignments. Hairnets are required when serving in the kitchen and will be provided to all volunteers (you may bring a hat to wear instead of a hairnet).

Jr. high, high school, and college student credits are recognized at the Mission. Each school requires different details for verification, and the student wishing to receive credit for volunteering should check with their school for further instructions and information.

The Mission is a great local institution for community service hours to be completed. The application process involves the individual completing and turning in an application which the Mission uses to receive a copy of the legal documents that the court gives us with the hours ordered along with a copy of the individual's ID. It is the individual’s responsibility to track their hours and have the supervisor on duty verify the time served. Once the individual's hours are completed, they bring their signed slip to the volunteer coordinator to keep a copy for our records. It is the individual's responsibility to get their completed paperwork to the court unless stated otherwise in court documents.

Any training necessary for a volunteer position at the Mission is provided at the time of service.
